Buying guides

The buying guide is not your product page.

Shoppers research a use case long before they pick a SKU.
Publishers and marketplaces answer “which one.” A grid that only answers price and stock does not.

Above the grid

Guides that point at live products.

Editors get a template they can repeat without thinning the advice, and a rule for when a product leaves the assortment.

  • 01

    One question per guide

The URL answers a single choice, with a framework in prose and the specs in a table. Internal links go to the products that fit and back from those products to the guide.

  • 02

    Assortment hygiene

Out-of-stock and discontinued items are swapped or labeled. A guide does not keep citing a dead variant because the paragraph was written in March.

  • 03

    Specs machines can read

Materials, dimensions, and compatibility sit in HTML, aligned with the product schema. A lifestyle paragraph is not a spec.

  • 04

    Reviews that happened

On-site reviews are the ones customers left. We do not invent ratings to win a star snippet, and we do not mark up a quote the brand wrote itself.

What they research

A use case, then a SKU.

Guides answer the choice. Product pages answer the item. They link to each other and do not pretend to be the same URL.

Width, terrain, and a budget band, then the products that fit. The guide is not a grid with the keyword in the H1.

Answer

Width, terrain, and a budget band come before any product name.

  • Running shoes for wide feet
  • One question per guide

One question, a recommendation a person can argue with, and links only to live variants.

SEO, AEO, GEO, AIO

Four checks on the buying guide.

Guide and product architecture is the search plan. A comparison an overview can cite is the answer-engine plan.

  • 01 — SEO

    The guide, not the SKU

Research queries rank a buying guide. The product URL stays on the product query.

    How search is built
  • 02 — AEO

    Criteria, then the pick

The guide states who the product is for before it asks for the add to cart.

    How answers cite a page
  • 03 — GEO

    Shopping chats

ChatGPT is prompted with the research question shoppers ask before they open a marketplace.

  • 04 — AIO

    Overview on the category

Category overviews are checked for a citation to the guide, separate from the product rich result.

The catalog wins “how much.” It loses “which.”

A DTC brand and a retailer share this leak. The product page can rank for its own name and still miss the research query: shoes for wide feet, a serum for retinoid beginners, a pan that can go in the oven. Those queries live on a publisher’s guide or a marketplace’s comparison. When an overview cites a source, it cites the page that made the choice.

Assortment makes the guide rot. A URL that recommends a discontinued color, or that sends the click to an out-of-stock variant, teaches both search and shoppers to trust the marketplace instead. Reviews you did not earn, pasted under a product, make the same mess.

The practice

How this engagement runs.

  1. 01

    Separate the choice

Research queries go to guides. Product pages stay on the item. They link both ways.

  2. 02

    Put specs in a table

Materials, dimensions, and fit sit in HTML that matches the product data, not in a lifestyle paragraph.

  3. 03

    Tie refresh to stock

Season and sell-out trigger the edit. A monthly blog quota does not.

  4. 04

    Match the marketplace

The brand, the name, and the specs on the other channel describe the same product.

We will not mark up a star rating the merchant wrote, or leave a guide citing a variant you no longer sell.

What we watch. Clicks on research queries, click-through from the guide into a live product, and whether an overview cites your guide or a publisher when the query is a comparison. A client figure is added here only after that client clears it.

The pass is an illustration for Ecommerce. A referring page sends a link to the URL that should own the query.
