# The shortlist is written before the demo.

Search for B2B SaaS: comparison queries, best-X-for-Y pages, and citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity. SEO, AEO, GEO, and AIO.
A buyer asks a model which tools fit a team of their size, then opens two tabs.

If your site never names the job, the alternatives, or the limit, the citation stays on a roundup.

## Category demand never reaches the product page.

Brand search already works. The missing demand is the question a champion pastes into ChatGPT or Perplexity: best onboarding tool for a 50-person team, or your product versus the one procurement already knows. Those answers name three vendors. A feature page that never states team size, implementation time, or who should not buy is not one of the three.

The blog makes this worse when it defines the category in the same words as the last vendor’s glossary. Models prefer a page that takes a side. Sales then inherits a shortlist you did not write, and the demo is a rebuttal instead of a first meeting.

## A job, a team, and the other logos.

Each commercial question gets one URL. The homepage cannot be the comparison and the category explainer.

### Best for

best customer onboarding tool for a 50-person team

State the team size, the job, and the condition that makes you a poor choice. “Best” with no boundary is a slogan.

### Versus

your product vs the incumbent CRM add-on

Name the other product. Buyers already did. A page that pretends it has no rival will not be the one quoted.

### Alternatives

alternatives to a legacy onboarding suite

Say what you replace and what you refuse. A list of adjectives does not help a champion defend the switch.

### Category

what is product-led onboarding software

A definition only if you add a line the glossaries lack: data you need, time to first value, who it fails for.

## Pages a shortlist can cite.

The asset is a small set of commercial URLs, dated, with a point of view sales will stand behind.

### One query, one job

We map the prompts and the searches that create pipeline, then give each a page. A keyword export is not the map.

### Competitors in the open

Versus and alternatives pages name the products buyers already compare. They include a date, a team-size fit, and the case where the other tool is the better buy.

### One product name

The company, the product, and the category stop drifting across the site, the docs, and the profiles models fetch. Three names read as three vendors.

### A passage sales can repeat

The opening is two to five sentences: who it is for, what has to be true in their stack, and what the first month looks like. That is the line an answer lifts.

## Cited domains

reddit.com is the most cited domain in B2B SaaS in this snapshot.

Source for this chart: [Top cited domains](https://shoutrank.com/data-studies/top-cited-domains.md).
This data is accumulated from multiple sources and internal training data, which helps us get the client cited.

| Domain | AI Overview | ChatGPT | Gemini | AI Mode | Perplexity |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| reddit.com | 1 | 187 | 0 | — | 0 |
| en.wikipedia.org | 0 | 156 | 0 | — | 0 |
| forbes.com | 1 | 64 | 0 | — | 0 |
| techradar.com | 0 | 96 | 0 | — | 0 |
| indeed.com | 0 | 89 | 0 | — | 0 |
| aissist.io | 0 | 0 | 0 | — | 1 |
| atlantsecurity.com | 0 | 0 | 1 | — | 0 |

| delight.ai | 0 | 0 | 0 | — | 1 |
| drata.com | 0 | 0 | 1 | — | 0 |

A dash means this snapshot has no count for that engine. A zero means the domain was not cited in the measured sample.

## What is at stake

- **Where the shortlist is written.** ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the roundup that names three tools.
- **URL that should own it.** A comparison or a “best for” page, not the homepage.
- **What sales inherits.** A shortlist you did not write, unless that page exists.

## The demo becomes a rebuttal.

Brand search fills the calendar. The champion who asked a model which tool fits a 50-person team already has two other tabs open. If your name is missing from that answer, the call is spent explaining why the roundup was wrong.

## Onboarding software for a 50-person team

Team size, the job, and the buyer who should leave. That is the passage a model can lift.

- For a company that already has a CRM and a messy first week, not for a company shopping a full HR suite.
- A clean employee record takes days. A messy one takes a quarter. The page says which you are.
- If payroll, benefits, and onboarding must live in one login, buy the suite. This product will not pretend to be it.

## Sequence

1. **Lock the prompts.** The questions sales already hears, plus the searches that match them. A keyword export does not pick the list.
2. **One URL each.** Best-for, versus, and alternatives stay on separate pages with a date and a point of view.
3. **Write the opening.** Two to five sentences a champion can paste into a memo. Sales reviews them before they go live.
4. **Read the names.** Each month, the same prompts. Who was named, which URL was linked, and which roundup won instead.

We will not publish an undated page that calls the product the best in the category and then count it as a comparison.

## What we watch

Whether ChatGPT and Perplexity name you on a fixed prompt set, which roundup they cite instead, and non-brand clicks to the comparison URLs.

A named result is published when that client clears the figure. A client figure is added here only after that client clears it.

## B2B SaaS questions

### Should we call our own product the best in the category?

Only with a boundary a stranger can check: team size, job, and the buyer who should pick something else. An undated “best” claim is what roundup sites already published, and they have the links.

### Do ChatGPT and Perplexity count as a channel we can report?

We keep a fixed list of prompts, record whether you are named, whether a URL is linked, and which competitors appear. There is no complete rank index for chat. We say so when the sample is too small to call a trend.

### What if legal will not let us name competitors?

Then we still describe the rival approach: a suite, a spreadsheet, a services firm. A page that cannot mention the choice the buyer is making will not be quoted in that choice.

### Where do product marketers and the blog disagree?

The blog stops publishing category definitions that do not add a fact. The commercial URLs carry the comparison. Thought pieces can exist; they do not replace the page the shortlist needs.

### How does this show up in the pipeline?

We look at assisted opportunities on the comparison URLs where analytics can see them, and at whether sales hears the category question or only the brand. We do not invent a sourced-pipeline number.
