# BigCommerce SEO

BigCommerce SEO from ShoutRank. Product and category URLs, facets, and the routes a catalog should not put in the index.
BigCommerce SEO decides which category, product, and faceted URLs belong in search, and which exist only inside the store.

BigCommerce is built for catalogs. Faceted navigation, variants, and brand pages can all become URLs. Some of those help a buyer who is already on the site. Few of them deserve a place in Google.

The strategy is [ecommerce SEO](https://shoutrank.com/ecommerce-seo). This page is the BigCommerce implementation: templates, URL settings, and the facet rules the platform supports.

ShoutRank does not guarantee a ranking or a citation.

## The problem

### Facet combinations are crawled.

Color plus size plus brand produces a grid with no unique copy and a long URL.

### Variants split one product.

Each option wants its own indexable page. Demand belonged to the parent.

### Blog and category target the same term.

Content was added because the category template felt thin, and now both rank poorly.

## How ShoutRank approaches it

We separate the navigation facets from the landing categories. Variants stay under the parent unless a variant has its own demand and its own copy. The blog is not allowed to steal a category query by accident.

We use BigCommerce’s URL and SEO fields rather than a front-end script that hides text.

## What the work includes

### Facet rule

Which filters may be crawled, if any.

### Variant rule

When a SKU gets its own URL.

### Category briefs

The categories that need an introduction.

### Template check

Titles, canonicals, and product schema matching the visible offer.

## Process

### Discovery

List categories that match how people search, not only how the warehouse is organized.

### Audit

Crawl facets and variant URLs.

### Strategy

Write the facet and variant rules.

### Implementation

Apply them with the team that owns the store.

### Monitoring

Refetch category and product samples.

### Optimization

Pull the blog off queries a category should own.

### Reporting

Rules, indexed categories, and facet URLs removed.

## Why ShoutRank

### Warehouse structure is not the IA

Buyers search by job. The catalog can still be organized by SKU behind that.

### Schema matches the page

Price and availability in markup have to be the price and availability on screen.

### No indexable filter grid

A crawlable combination is a decision, and the default decision is no.

## How success is measured

Category URLs indexed with unique copy.

Facet URLs out of the index.

Variant URLs only where the rule allowed them.

A named client result is published when that client clears the figure. Until then the report is the measurement.

## Questions

### Should brand pages be indexed?

When shoppers search those brands and the page says something the product grid does not. An empty brand shell should not.

### Do you run the BigCommerce admin?

We specify and review. Your store team applies template and app changes.

### How does this differ from Magento?

The catalog problem is similar. The controls are not. Magento’s store views and indexers are a different project.
